Winterhearth (Mountain Folk Region)
Falnorian Adult League Play Location – Season 9 (2021-2022)
Winterhearth is one of three sub-regions of the Mountain Folk region in the Halhar Mountains. This location is very remote and has little contact with the rest of Falnorian, whether by trade or news or travel. Its only city, Keystone, overlooks the edge of the sheer cliff face that separates the lower Halhars from the rest of Falnorian; the rest of its population is scattered in remote villages and homesteads throughout the mountains and the lower foothills.
The challenges that face the Winterhearth are many. The mountain terrain itself is difficult to navigate even during the warmest months; some peaks and valleys are filled with snow all year round, and are home to glaciers and other icy hazards. Other mountains are themselves volcanos, and actively spew lava and ash at all times of year. This is to say nothing of earthquakes, landslides, and fierce storms – but not all challenges are physical in nature. The Halhars are home to a host of strange and bizarre supernatural creatures: powerful elementals, demons, angels, undead, and even stranger outsiders are commonplace and roam the region without concern for mortal rhyme or reason. Magic runs rife throughout the region, and can coalesce into its own storms and terrifying elemental hazards; nearly all creatures that live in the mountains have been changed by it in some way, including the Mountain Folk themselves.
The isolated nature of the Mountain Folk region as a whole has resulted in a culture that is highly individualistic and distrustful of authority. Its remote villages must be self-sufficient in the event that their route to the outside world is destroyed by a natural disaster – so everyone learns to do things their own ways. Winterhearth is in many ways more easygoing than its neighbors; it is derived from builders and crafters of all kinds, and from traditions that seek to work with and alongside the entities and natural challenges that surround them rather than seek to master them. While in the past, Winterhearth has constructed wondrous pathways – vast bridges that spanned the great rivers, and massive pulleys to ferry goods up and down the cliff face – these have since been destroyed by the warring that has torn this region into its three current facets. There are the esoteric Eldar to the east across the Eld, and the stoic Fellsworn to the west across the Fell – and neither are particularly friendly.
One of the few elements that strings this region together are its outposts. Traveling outposts, many of them with their origin as hideouts during the guerrilla wars that have been common throughout our history, dot the mountainsides throughout the region. They are supplied by the neutral Underworld faction, a faction of traders named so for their knowledge of the tunnels and underground passages that allow for easier travel through the region. These outposts serve as not just inns, but also gathering- and tradeposts for any local villages in the area; and as watchposts to keep an eye on potential dangers. These traveling outposts are invaluable, and in many ways are the fragile thread that ties the Winterhearth together into something resembling a coherent whole.
