Adult League is intended for high school aged players into young adulthood, and is open both to new players and to players who have aged out of the junior league. The stories told in adult league are much more demanding and meant to challenge older players: themes tend to be heavier with significant emphasis on moral and ethical dilemmas, and there are rarely perfect or easy solutions to any given problem. The adult league focuses much more on developing and practicing deep reasoning and critical thinking, sustained empathy, and self-reflection. This league has a strong emphasis on roleplaying and character development, and character work is considered a core part of the adult league game.
Adult League players are expected not only to respect other players, but to actively and meaningfully support one another both in and out of game. This league is known to be very challenging, and having other players’ backs – whether they are brand new or have decades of experience – makes a big difference in how well each season runs.
Features of Adult League
Character Creation & Advancement: The character creation system used in adult league gives players a great deal of flexibility to design their characters; character creation goes into more depth, and players are generally required to submit their characters for approval before playing. Character advancement is earned in the form of experience points, which players track and spend individually. Classes are structured level-by-level and allow for easier multiclassing and more variability between characters; the adult league classes can be found in the main classes section of the rulebook. Adult league doesn’t use character sheets, although many players design and build their own to keep track of their characters.
Rules & Mechanics: Adult league is a true hitpoints system wherein characters have variable hitpoints and mana. Adult league also adds several game mechanics, particularly regarding character advancement in classes and tradecrafts; they can pick up fluencies that help them hone their tradecrafts to their characters’ interests, and can design skill masteries for classes they have completed. These are meant for adult league players to theme their characters’ skills to their history and experiences.
Longer Events & Workshops: Adult League events tend to run a bit longer than the standard events. We still start at 10AM, but run until 5:30PM; and often run longer to wrap things up since adult league players have more flexibility with their time. Events run a little later to make room for mid-day workshops; these are topics meant to support adult league players in fleshing out their characters, practicing acting skills, or going more in-depth with game world information. Workshop topics change month to month depending on what workshops players have requested and what the player base at the time needs.
Slack & The Inn: Adult league features an “inn” that players can roleplay in between events. The inn is a non-combat zone, but allows players to develop their character’s relationship to the party and discuss plans and ideas between events. We also have a slack that is used to schedule additional events, for players to share game information with each other, to host the inn, and also just to hang out.
Actions & Additional Events: Players in adult league get “actions” in between events, which are opportunities for them to follow up on ledes left loose during events or to follow their individual character’s storyline. Actions are run via email and are often done in small groups of players, but occasionally can be sent alone as well. Adult League also features a few additional events: a location day to establish each year’s setting, and supporting events such as equipment builds and the yearly rules day that give them more ownership over the game.
