Trade in Falnorian (Circa 3.3)

This is a brief outline of the state of trade – primary imports and exports – for each region in Falnorian, circa the year 216.3.3. Exports are a combination of what makes up the greatest volume or value of trade and what the region is known for; imports, similarly, are also a combination of what makes up the greatest share as well as what goods and resources are most crucial for the region to bring in. Keep in mind that this is not a measure of what each region produces, but what it trades in – just as in real life, many of these regions may harvest or craft a given resource that doesn’t show up here; be it because there’s no demand for it outside the region, it’s too challenging to ship, or the region simply doesn’t produce enough for its internal demand and may even need to import it.

Keep in mind also the limitations of trade logistics at this point in the world’s development. Though teleport networks stretch across the map now, these are mostly meant for individual people rather than the full bulk and sometimes delicate needs of large quantities of goods. Most physical goods are still shipped overland or overseas in the traditional way, though more and more traders are making use of the stone-call passages to greatly diminish the length and costs of their journeys. As such, keep in mind the form of these goods: food, for instance, is typically in a preserved from as it will spoil quickly across regular time and distance. Valuable materials are also often transported in small quantities, as raiding from bandits and thieves is still very much a concern; and so, they remain expensive.

Lastly, services are also included below. The teleport networks as they are now do allow for quick transport of people to distant locations; and so, knowledge and other knowledge- or skill-based services are a significant part of the exchange between regions in a way that would have been impossible in our own world during comparable periods of trade and travel ability.

Bellmorn
Bellmorn is the most active economy in Falnorian, and overall the wealthiest. It specializes in many complicated crafts, particularly tinkerage – such as lenses, locks, and so on – as well as complicated and specialized architecture and other building projects. It also produces the most books in Falnorian, along with a variety of other novelties. The biggest industry in Bellmorn, however, doesn’t show up in its imports and exports – but rather in hospitality and entertainment. Since many people travel through Bellmorn on their way to other regions, it has a great deal in the way of lodging, restaurants, and entertainment suitable for travelers from all over.

Coradel
Coradel has the largest sea-facing ports in Falnorian, and does a greater share of its trade overseas – particularly with Illionor and the Gildmark Empire – than any other region in Falnorian. Much of their industry is tied into transportation and trade itself – wagons, roadbuilding, shipbuilding, sailmaking, bookkeeping, etc – as they facilitate most of Falnorian’s international trade. However, they also have access to an unusual amount of magical materials; and as such, they trade in a great deal of alchemicals and enchanted goods.

Eldar
Eldar has an immense amount and variety of resources at its disposal, and is a powerhouse for producing both agricultural and crafted goods. With a few exceptions, nearly all of its basic resource needs are met; as are basic wants such as spices and other luxury goods. The vast majority of what Eldar imports are the result of specialized crafting in other regions: those who have mastered the use of more niche materials that are harder to access or produce in Eldar.

Halimin
Halimin tends to produce most of what it needs on its own with little left over to trade – and little it needs from elsewhere. Though Halimin produces many luxury goods, it cannot compete with Harmini on that front; instead, a great deal of what Halimin has to trade is knowledge. Their doctors, healers, and coroners are among the best in Falnorian, and their bureaucrats and translators in high demand across the map.

Harmini
Harmini produces large quantities of luxury goods and ingredients; these are shipped all across the map, but many of them find their way to Bellmorn in particular. On the other hand, they import quite a few practical resources – metal and stone materials and goods among them – as these things are otherwise hard to come by in the region. Materials for spellcasting are among the practical goods they export; to this day, Harmini has the largest easily-accessible sources of crystalline in Falnorian. Their hospitality industry, though not as large by volume as Bellmorn’s, is also significant and renowned for its quality across the map.

  • Tertiary: Traders, Musicians, Artists, Performers, Enchanters, Bards, Diplomats, Mages
  • Imports: Weapons & Armor, Metal, Stone, Tinkerage, Wheat, Salt

Riftlands
The Riftlands has the lowest import and export rate of any of the regions; much of this is due to incompatibilities between crafting in most regions and the wide variety of needs, particularly in regards to physical size and cultural baseline, at play in the Riftlands. They generally make their own crafted goods, and mostly import and export raw materials. Like Coradel, they have a sea-facing port and do a certain amount of trade overseas; particularly with Eos and the Gildmark Empire. They are also responsible for a disproportionate amount of shipbuilding in Falnorian, as they have an edge when it comes to crafting large structures.
