Naming Conventions

Ardel
Ardellian names tend to be long and multisyllabic, and may include multiple middle names. These names can often be broken up into many variations; Ardellians tend to go by the longest variations of their name in formal settings, and go by shorter nicknames in more casual or familiar ones. Using the wrong variation of a person’s name tends to be a common way to express insult – so when in Ardel make certain you know what to call someone by.

Eldspel
Eldspelian names often sound soft and sibilant to other parts of Falnorian. Most are either short and quick or flowing and rhythmic (and occasionally tongue-tying), and make heavy use of fricative sounds. While given names are important, it is not uncommon for Eldspellians to go by various other chosen names throughout their lives – not so casual as a nickname, nor so formal as a name change, but rather another form of self-expression and acknowledging the changes in one’s life and personality.

Falnin
As with all things, names in Falnin are the most varied in all of Falnorian. This is due in part to the number of people who have settled from other nations and even, and in part due to Falnin’s love for all things novel and distinctive. So far as names that identifiably Falnin, most are simple and tend to be two-syllable. The single other notable trend amongst Falnin names is flower names, which are given often regardless of gender.

Gildmar
Gildmari names tend to sound more guttural than names in many other parts of Falnorian, owing to their influence from Dennond. Names also tend to be more formal in Gildmar than other places in Falnorian: shortening or nicknaming is considered a highly intimate gesture, and thus considered an insult in most situations. Surnames are similar if somewhat longer, although within more traditional families it is not uncommon to use a -sson or -sdottir surname with the first name of the same-sex parent.

Oldmin
Oldmin names tend to be substantial and sturdy, much like the people who live there. Most first names tend to be shorter – one or two syllables – and middle names are relatively uncommon. Last names, however, are very important in Oldmin: in general, a person’s last name is related to their family trade or profession, and is a combination of their parents’ last names. Brickbottle+Briarwood may become Brickwood, Glassdrop+Emberglow might become Glassglow, and so on. Oldmin people use this to trace their lineage and family tree, which are both very important to its people.

Syenon
Syenon is more likely than any other nation to name a person “after” something – and, given the heavy influences from elves and from the bard school in the region, these tend to be after aspects of nature or storied people. Names range from serious to silly, and from simple to nigh-unpronounceable depending on creativity of the namer. Many people from Syenon like to acquire new names as well, and may have a variety of nicknames or playful titles from different areas in their lives.
